Poo'Pla Standard Poodles
New. The Poo'Pla Blog

Thanksgiving Eve 2011

11/23/11  Today the Poodles and I went for a long walk on a new trail that we have found.  Mulligan spent most of the day in the cover while Hooligan and Ruffian ran ahead to scout.

Over the weekend we visited with Jamie in Pittsburgh PA when we went to my Mom's 88th birthday party!  I thought we could spoil dogs, but my sister's family has taken it to a whole new level.  Jamie goes everywhere with them.  She is so well trained that she goes car shopping with Craig, to his barber shop, and accompanies them for walks without a leash.

She guards their yard from turkeys and deer.  It was great to see her and get the snuggles that only Jamie can give.

We've also had exciting news from the owner of the sire for our last Hooligan litter the "Fabulous Four. " Roseann Aman let us know that "Webster",  CH Ascot Eat Your Heart out OAX OAJ, has acheived his Masters in Agility in both classes.  He is currently working to achieve his MACH which is the highest AKC agility title.  GOOD LUCK WEBSTER! Keep us posted.

Here's a photo of Hooli and Ruff on the trail today.  Mulligan is somewhere in that brush to the left :-)   Happy Thanksgiving to all.

November 14, 2011 Congratulations to Poo'Pla's Stormin' Blue Norman of Howlynn "Norman" SHR

Congratualtions to Irene Lynne, Pete Wigget and of course "Norman" on achieving their UKC Started Title and as of this writing their FIRST Seasoned pass!  I am so excited for this dedicated team.  Norman was a special puppy that Dana and I held on to until we could find "just" the right owners.  Our wish came true in Irene and Pete.  Norman's talent is promising and we're looking forward to hearing more about this exciting Hooligan puppy.

Ruffian, Mulligan and Hooligan have been tracking training lately.  With Dana's departure from the fabulous Poo'Pla family, our field training has been limited.  However, with hope next season (spring 2012) we'll be competing again in AKC and HRC events.  Ruffian has 1 Master pass and 1 Finished Pass; Hooligan needs to be tuned up for Seasoned and Senior.  Both dogs have talent that is being wasted being Claudia's pets for now!

But the exciting news is how good these dogs are at Tracking!  Both have progressed fairly quickly.  Assuming that all continues to go well, we'll hope to compete at PCA 2012 in the Tracking events.

I am anxious for 2011 to be over as it hasn't been my best year. Dana moved out of the Poo'Pla pack unexpectedly in Apri 2011.  Later in the summer, I suddenly lost a very dear friend, and my Standard Poodle mentor, Glenna Carlson of "Ascot." To date, Glenna bred over 80 AKC Champions.   I own three Ascot champions, and of course these are the foundation for our  CH Poo'Pla breeding which includes Hooligan, and Ruffian and Skye -- who all  hold field titles as well.  Additionally we have several field trained dogs that include  Newman - A Therapy Dog, Chance - A Therapy Dog, Jimmi - Therapy Dog, and 13 others are all of the Ascot line.

Glenna's keen eye and breeding planning has resulted in a line that is not just pretty, but smart as well.  I miss her daily.  With hope, I'll be able to keep the line going via Hooligan and Norman once things settle in 2012.

If you own one of the Poo'Pla's please keep me posted.  We love to hear from you and I promise, I am slowly gaining steam again and will post results and progress here.

Happy Birthday to Mulligan! She's Ten Years Old

Our  pride and joy, and first Poodle as a married couple, Mulligan celebrated her 10th birthday on January 1st.  She partied like it was, well, 2011, dining on a bone and celebrating with the Pak.  At 10 she is still a lot of fun and manages to stay very active.  She is spoiled rotten, and we're proud of it!  Happy Birthday to this very special dog.

2011 - WHAT?

Once again it has happened. Someone stole the last quarter of the year 2010! Suddenly, I wake to find that it is New Year's Day 2011, the Rosebowl Parade is on, and it's time for Pork and Sauerkraut!

The "Fab 4" puppies are long gone and living in their new homes.  Each is special and with a special family.  "Norman" or Poo'Pla's Stormin Norman as we call him, headed for Alabama to live with his new mom who plans on competing in hunt tests with him.

"Newman" - went to Detroit to live with one of our prior owners and a Mulligan puppy called "Jimmie/"  Newman and Jimmie have become friends and apparently are quite the pair.  We hope that Newman will become the Therapy dog that Jimmie has become.

"Ali", who has been named several names prior to hitting her final one, has gone to North Dakota/Montana where she is learning to upland hunt and be a good sister to a prior Ascot Poodle owner.  She's brought here new buddy some re-discovered energy and apparently they too are having quite the time of it.

Finally, but not at all last, our little girl Cha Cha, who is now "Charley" has gone off to California to live with a family that also owned a Poo'Pla Standard Poodle who was dear to our hearts, "Cosette." Charley was a special surprise for the Murphy family.  She's worked her way into their hearts and we regularly recieve updates about her as well as photos.

So what will 2011 bring here at the Poo'Pla Poodle house? Likely Claudia will be doing a seminar on "Starting Your Poodle In Fieldwork" this spring.  Ruffian has 1 Master Pass and 1 Finished Pass as we haven't run many tests.  We've been busy with work and with the puppies in the fall.  But we're trying to find renewed focus in spring 2011 so with hope we'll be seeing some old friends at hunt tests and be bringing home some ribbons!

Hooligan too is still training.  She's worked sporadically on blinds, but we'll try to be more consistent with her training and get her out in Seasoned and Senior this spring as well.

No litters planned - yet.  But we'll think about it!  For now we're pleased with good health and a pack full of loving Poodles, and that should make for a very good year!

2 Boys and 2 Girls born on June 28 2010!

On June 28, 2010 our girl Hooligan (CH Poo'Pla's Hooligan of Dalmore JH (WC WCX)) brought 4 beautul black puppies into the world.  There were 2 girls and 2 boys.  One will go to a hunting home in Montana, one will go to a prior owner, and Therapy volunteer in Detroit Michigan, and one will be a pet in a family that owned a prior Poodle.

Hooligan was bred to "Webster" CH Ascot Eat Your Heart Out AX OAJ - a dog from our line that has excellent hips.  All other testing is complete and normal.  The four puppies are thriving and today, August 6, 2010 they had their first swim!  We are thrilled about the puppies and the joy they will bring to their new owners.

Poodle Rescue in the Carolinas

I get an amazing number of requests for puppies.  I am complimented by the interest and the respect for our approach to owning Standard Poodles.  Many of you have written kind notes.  Thank you.

Since I don't breed often, I do try to help people locate Poodles elsewhere.  Right now there are many Standard Poodles with various life experiences, available from the Carolina Poodle Rescue organization.  I've spent hours going through the various Poodles housed there - and I encourage anyone looking for a pet to consider rescue.  There are miniature and toy Poodles available as well.

Every rescue has a different story - some from neglect, yes. But others have ended up in rescue as the result of an owner who must move, has fallen ill, or has had a life changing event that prevents them from keeping their dogs. You'll be doing yourself and the Poodles a favor by visiting the site to see "who" is available.

Your special companion may just be waiting to meet you! The site is http://www.carolinapoodlerescue.org

Technology and Poodles

I am really not at all sure how this technology and Poodles things has come together, but I am willing to give it a try.

2010 - A new year of fun

Our pack of Poodles is enjoying the winter - though we have had some snow that we hadn't planned on!  Mulligan and Ruffian continue to train for Agility.  And Ruffian and his sister Hooligan continue to train in the field.  We're all happy and healthy and that is what is most important!  While we have no exciitng news, we did all travel to Pennsylvania to Grandma's house for the holiday.  Then the Poodle's went to Aunt Stacey's kennel while Mom and Dad went on a cruise to ring in the new year.  January has flown by - and we need to get our training together - the Greatest Poodle Show On Earth - The PCA National Specialty - is just around the corner!

We've heard from several of our "grandkids" and enjoy the updates, photos and notes.  Keep them coming!

Claudia

AKC Senior Hunter Title for Ruffian

We are happy to announce that Ruffian and Claudia qualified for their 4th - and therefore for their Senior Hunter Title in Ohio at the Buckeye Retriever Club.  We thank the judges - Bob Reckert and Peggy Baumann for recognizing our boys strengths as a hunting companion.

It has been a wonderful 2009 for Poo'Pla Standard Poodles in the field.  We have earned two Junior Hunter titles, one for Hooligan and one for Ruffian, plus we earned Ruffian's Senior Hunting Title.  With hope we will come out in 2010 with Hooligan in Senior and Ruffian is Master levels.

For now we hope to get into hunting season - as well as locate a farm for our family to use for more training and relaxing.  Thanks to all of you who follow along and cheer for our Poodles in the field!

Weekend Hunt Tests in Remington Virginia

We just returned from a weekend of Hunt Tests in Remington Virginia.

We have finisihed our 4th AKC Breed Champion and Junior Hunter, CH Poo'Pla's Hooligan of Dalmore! Hooligan achieved her JH in 4 out of 5 tries - and we are very proud of this promising girl.

Her brother, CH Poo'Pla's Ruffian of Talisker JH (WC WCX) achieved his 3rd Q for the Senior Hunter and will need one more Q to title.  He too is a wonderful boy and we are so very proud of them!

Meanwhile, up in Connecticut, CH Poo'Pla's Lagavulin Sky achieved his WC.  Sky and his owner, Richard, focus on upland hunting primarily but we are very proud of him and all that this great team has achieved!

Ongoing News

WHOO HOO! June 2008 is a doozy!

Sorry no photos yet - but BIG news. Mulligan received her 4th AKC Master Hunter pass in Ohio at the Buckeye Retriever Club this past weekend. One more to go...

We proudly announce ...

CH Poo'Pla's Hooligan of Dalmore! Hooli completed her second major over the weekend handled by Allan Chambers in California. She is headed home this week and will start her Obedience and Field Training joining Mom Mulligan, and brother Ruffian, in the field! Hooli is our 5th champion and our 3rd homebred champion!

And at the Central Carolina Poodle Club WC WCX last weekend in Monroe, NC CH Poo'Pla's Ruffian of Talisker a.k.a. "Ruff" achieved back-to-back WC's. He is going to be one fine boy in the field. And Jamie achieved her PCA Gold Medallion qualifications in WCX.

Meanwhile, over the weekend we were thrilled to be in RI where we got to see 2 of our puppies...CH. Lagavulin Sky "Sky" where he was field training, and Poo'Pla's Home Sweet Home, "Chance" who has completed pre-agility, obtained her CGC and Therapy Approval and is now participating in a 6 week Therapy Course so that his owner, Becky Primavera and he can do therapy work with him in New England. We thank the owners of these two special Poodles for loving their dogs!

June 2008

On May 31 and June 31 the Central Carolina Poodle Club sponsored a back to back WC WCX event weekend. It was a weekend full of fun and fellowship for a group of people that really enjoy training their Poodles to retrieve on land and water.

Proudly, we recognize our own CH Poo'Pla's Ruffian of Talisker a.k.a. "Ruff" as he achieved his first WC passes on both Saturday and Sunday. He is a promising dog and one that we hope folks will see much more of in AKC and UKC hunt test venues.

And, our girl "Jamie", CH Ascot For Your Eyes Only RN JH, achieved her 15th qualification pass and her PCA sponsored Gold Medallion recognizing her efforts.

As important as our own dogs' success, we were thrilled to watch the Poodles of many friends succeed. Just over a year ago, Claudia and a friend conducted a field training seminar with the CCPC club where a number of interested, but inexperienced Poodle handlers tested the instinct of their dogs on live birds and retrieving drills. It is a joy to see almost every one of those who attended that seminar participate at some level in the testing this weekend -- and most qualified!
Kudos to all with Poodles who give retrieving a try - and stick with it. We are thrilled to be a part of it.

May 2008
We stay in touch with most of our owners. These two photos just in from Caro and Ellen Krissman, newlyweds, and owners of Pilot, the ring bearer in their recent wedding. Congratulations Caro and Ellen and of course to Pilot!

News from Carol Myers, proud owner and training partner of "Bam Bam", PooPla's Glenlivets Bam Bam RN CD.

"Good Morning Claudia: Do you remember 2 years ago today? You were trying desperately to get your black puppy to the Milwaukee Airport to meet his new parents. Larry and I still have that vision of you walking from the terminal area with the Sherpa bag and that black head and paws sticking out. A vision ingrained in our minds. We were talking about it over coffee this morning and how much joy he has brought into our lives. I kept all the e-mails that we received in looking for this Poodle, and one e-mail from you talked about Bam Bam bringing the ball to you to play retrieve. I just thought I’d tell you that he still does that every morning. After we go outside and I get things in order for breakfast, he brings a ball and we play. And in the evenings, if he’s bored and I’m on the computer, a ball will go rolling across the keyboard. He’s really funny when Larry reclines back in his chair. Bam can be asleep and he will get the ball and drop it in Larry’s lap. I can be right there, but he thinks Larry should play. So Cute!

I’ve sent a couple of pictures. The one with the yellow stuffed Poodle, is the 2nd place and “High Scoring Poodle in Trial” picture. The next one is exactly how he spends is afternoons, he’s spoiled.

We have had such pleasure from this puppy. And by the way, he is still puppy. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for letting us have him."

April 2008

We're on our way home from the Poodle Club of America National Specialty! PCA is always a lot of fun, very busy, but fun. We connect with friends old and make new all the time. The week kicked off with a SUPER Hunt Test for Poopla Standard Poodles.

Mulligan achieved her 3rd AKC Master Pass on Saturday! She was one of three Poodles entered in this advanced class, and she is the only one that passed! She needs only two more passes to earn her AKC MH. [Picture at Left: Ted Finley - Judge, Claudia & Mulligan, and Barry Frye -Judge]

Meanwhile Jamie was recognized for her achievements in the field. She was awarded the Silver Medallion - the second in the level of Medallions for having achieved 10 Passes at AKC, UKC and PCA Hunt Test events - with at least 5 of those being at PCA sponsored events.

We are very proud of both Mulligan and Jamie and are happy to share this exciting news!

March 2008

It was a good weekend for Poodles at our house! Jamie achieved her 4th Q in Junior Hunter classes (AKC) to finish her Junior Hunter title (AKC) this weekend. We're very proud of Jamie!

Hooligan went Winners Bitch in California for two days, she is waiting for a major to complete her Championship and then she'll be home to start her training for the field. Ruffian is wrapping up Double T and should be starting swim by's as the water warms up!

Claudia has been handling Mulligan at some UKC and AKC events. Unfortunately Claudia has a lot to learn about being a handler ... it is one thing to watch and another thing to do! But we're having a lot of fun and meeting new people ~ as well as meeting up with others who have supported our efforts in the past.

January 2008

Hooligan went best of winners at Simi Valley California last weekend. We are very proud of her and are ready for her to come home. She needs a 3 point major to finish. She is muscled up and has beautiful color. We're looking forward to her becoming CH Poo'Pla's Hooligan of Dalmore and heading for the field and Obedience ring!

November 20, 2007

We're just back from another Duck Hunt at the Skeeterbranch Hunting Preserve! This time we took Mulligan and her son Ruffian that is in started training. We had a blast. Mulligan developed even more confidence since the last hunt and perhaps the competition from her son was good as she "showed him how it was done."

Ruffian was a little confused about why noone was throwing him a duck when the guns went off -- but by the end of the morning he was doing his own retrieves in the flooded corn fields. We met some truly interesting people on this hunt, one of which was a professional hunter that travels to different places in the world and guides. He was really familiar with Hunting Poodles which was wonderful.

All in all, I'd say that Mulligan and Ruffian had a super time -- and that they are doing a great job promoting the talent of Poodles in a venue they were known for long ago!

November 18, 2007

Dana , Mulligan and I went Duck Hunting in GA last week with my friend Lisa and her Lab, Scout. We had a blast! Mulligan did a super job handling. We're off again this week for some more fun and are looking forward to working with Mulls again in the fields and ponds!

October 15, 2007

Dana, Mulligan and Jamie were at Hunt Tests this weekend. Jamie acheived another JH pass and is closing on her JH title. Mullian broke on the triple in the first series - but we don't mind errors of enthusiasm! She picked up up the birds and brought them back, but due to her break she did not qualify!

We're off to Tennessee this weekend!

October 03, 2007

In October we attended a WC WCX Seminar and Tests sponsored by the Central Carolina Poodle Club in Louisville, NC. Dana and I had a chance to work with the younger dogs running a "Poodle Stakes." We also ran Jamie in the WC WCX test where she passed both taking her one step closer to her PCA Silver Medallion.

Mulligan has been off with a shoulder injury. However this week we leave for VA to do some training and we will see where she is!

Ruffian is busy retrieving his heart out after going through the "Force Fetch" program. He was a great student and shows plenty of promise for future hunting tests.

Alias continues to train for her CD and CDX Obedience work -- and as soon as Hunt Test season is over we will get her out to see how she does in some tests.

Happy Training!

September 6, 2007

We are just back from Frederick Oklahoma where we were Dove hunting with other Poodle friends and a few guys from Louisiana! What a blast. Mulligan and Ruffian got to go along for their first Dove hunt. Mulligan was super in the field and brought back the birds (when we were able to shoot them ;-)

Next we are off to Louisburg NC on the 15th and 16th for the Central Carolina Poodle Club WC WCX...and then on to VA to train up for the fall HT season! More news soon!

August 4, 2007

It was way to hot to train today, so we played in the water...click on the photo below here to see some quick video! Mulligan, Ruffian and Jamie had a good time.

July 26, 2007

With the lazy days of summer in full steam there isn't a LOT of activity around the house with the dogs other then swimming and fetching for fun. We just got some new photos from PCA so we posted them in Summer 2007 Photo Gallery at the bottom of this page. We also celebrated the birthdays of our first litter. Our owners sent us some cute photos and quips about their puppies!

Mulligan is training up for some Open Obedience work. Jamie is practicing for JH and Ruffian is getting ready to take retrieving seriously! Alias is keeping her eyes on the yard vermin and keeping us aware of neighborhood activities. More news when we have it!

July 12, 2007

Happy Birthday to our July 12 2005 Litter! Mazel, Maggie, Theo, Uptown and Chance are all happily growing up with their wonderful owners all over the country. We enjoy hearing from them occasionally and are including a few photos!

June 17th

We have just returned from the Poodle Club of America National Specialty held in Salsibury MD. It was a stellar week for Poo'Pla Standard Poodles in the hunting tests!

Far Right: Jamie (black), Mulligan (brown) and Dana

Major congratulations to Jamie, Mulligan and Dana on their super Hunting Work!

"Mulligan"qualified for her second Pass at the AKC Master Hunter test. She also passed in Senior where she ran for exhibition purposes, and in the WC WCX tests held on Sunday. These passes qualified her as one of the first 2 recipients of the PCA Gold Hunting Medallion - PCA's highest honor of achievement for working Poodles.

"Jamie" qualified for her second AKC Junior Hunter pass. She also passed her WC WCX tests thus qualifying her for the Bronze Medallion the first level of achievement for the PCA sponsored recognition program. Jamie swam her little heart out and we are so proud of her work as she trains very little!

Alias and Claudia had a good time in the Obedience ring...where fun is what is important. We'll be working on "sitting" rather then "downing" on the sit stay!

Poodle Club of America attracts over a thousand Poodles in every size and color from across the United States. It is always a week full of fun, friendship, and tough competition in every venue - from AKC Hunting Tests, Agility & Obedience Trials to the Conformation Ring.

This was the weekend of the WC and WCX seminar that Claudia co-instructed with Margaret Fox. The seminar was held in Burlington NC and it was a ball! We had 14 handler/dog teams and 2 observers for the weekend. It was wonderful to see so many Poodles showing interest in "working" with birds and pigeons.

Meanwhile, in Iowa, PooPla's Hooligan of Dalmore was earning her 1st point showing as an adult! We are REALLY proud of our brown girl and are hoping she finishes quickly.

And then there is Mulligan...she has completed the hunt test season here with 1 MH pass. After spending a summer relaxing she'll be back out in the fall.

March 19, 2007

It was a BIG weekend for Poo'Pla Standard Poodles. St. Patrick's day has always been good to Dana and me -- it is the day that we met 13 years ago! But it was really fun this year!

We are thrilled to announce that Ruffian is now -- CH. Poo'Pla's Ruffian of Talisker! He finished with a four point major in Kentucky. He was presented by Chris and Rachel and we are thankful for their care and commitment to getting him finished. Now it's off with the hair and out to the fields. We still have a few weeks until the close of preserve Quail hunting!

Not to be outdone by the young ones, Alias and Jamie completed their Rally Novice titles in Obedience with a 98 and a 97 respectively. Rally is so much fun as the handler can communicate with the dog! We had a super time and of course are ready to keep going to CD classes next.

Alias has asked for a new handler since her Mom crumbled into a pile of nerves during the CD test. Alias is ready, her handler isn't!

And, naughty Mulligan returned to the field for a MH test -- and decided she didn't like the briars all that much. So no pass for her. But we'll have a few more tries before the season ends.

February 4, 2007 Mulligan has passed her 1st Master Hunter Test under the guidance of Kristie Wilder. The test was held in Monteverde FL. We are so proud of both Mulligan and Kristie!

Pictured below is "Ruffian," Poo'Pla's Ruffian of Talisker.

Our boy Ruff earned 13 points and a major before the age of 12 months. He needs one Major to complete his Championship. And then, it is on to basic field work!

Pilot is hunt training in CA so he can hunt with his owner someday soon! Meanwhile he is a great companion and the office dog. He's named after George Washington's hunting companion -- a poodle!

"Bam Bam" Owned by the Myers in Illinois.

He has his CGC already and is working with Carol to compete in Obedience. Larry just gets to love him and laugh! I just got a photo of Bam in the snow. He likes it!

November 24, 2006

"Ruffian" PooPla's Ruffian of Talisker, was awarded another point going Best of Winners over the weekend. He now has 12 points and 1 major at just under 11 months old!
